S2Games has adopted a free-to-play business model for Heroes Of Newerth to attract the DotA Genre players and to compete with the other MOBA titles, For e.g. League of Legends & DotA 2. The Free to Play model was implemented in the recent Hon 2.1.0 update and it received an overwhelming response from the community boosting the current active players to 400k. Existing users who purchased HoN are unhappy about this change and they have a feeling of getting ripped off.
